This occasion, we will share the information about sentence in English.
Sentence is a group of words that has a meaning and grammatically correct. Sentence must have Subject and predicate. Subject is the thing that do something or be explained. Predicate is the verb or the explanation (can be adjective or noun)
Ex : table is wood I make ( a group of words but there is no meaning and grammatically incorrect)
I make a table ( group of words that has meaning and grammatically correct)
a. She reads a book ( She is subject) (read is predicate (verb)= subject do something
b She is beautiful ( she is subject) (beautiful is predicate (adjective) = subject is explained
c. She is a doctor ( she is subject) (doctor is predicate (noun) = subject is explained
Kinds of sentence
1. Positive/assertive/statement sentence
is a sentence that state or declares something. It can be the fact, opinion.
Ex:
a. the sun rises in the East
b. I go to school
c. I must be going home right now.
2. Interrogative
is a sentence that questioning something. Question mark (?) is put in the last part of the sentence.
Ex :
a. are you okay?
b can I help you?
c. can you show me where the post office is?
3. Imperative sentence
is a sentence that gives a command, advice, request, suggestion and an order. sometimes we put an exclamation (!) at the end of the sentence
A. close the door, please (command)
b. you should go home now (advice,suggestion)
c. please lend me Rp. 10.000. (request)
4. Exclamatory sentence
is a sentence that express some expression of feeling; joy, happy, sad, wonder and anger. exclamation (!) is put at the end of the sentence.
ex :
a. what a good girl you are!
b wow! that's amazing!
c. damn!
Difference between exclamatory and imperative
a. close the door, please! ( asking someone to close the door)
b what a strong door it is! (just amuse about the strengh of the door, not ask the door to be strong)
5. Optative sentence
is a sentence that express about praying or wish to someone or something. it is also end by exclamation (!)
ex :
a. wish you all the best!
b. happy birthday!
c. good luck!
How about clause. clause (independent) is also considered as a sentence but it is part of a sentence also.
Ex :
I go to school after making my bed ( there 1 sentence with two clauses)
the clause are I go to school ( independent clause) and after making my bed ( dependent clause)
